Rental agreement and conditions for 4Drive Canary Islands car hire
These terms and conditions govern your rental agreement with 4Drive Canary Islands. By booking a vehicle with us, you accept these terms in full. Please read them carefully before completing your reservation. Last updated: July 2026.
When you book a car with 4Drive Canary Islands, you enter into a legally binding rental agreement. Your booking confirmation serves as proof of this agreement. The rental begins at the agreed pickup time and location (Tenerife South Airport, Tenerife North Airport, Gran Canaria Airport, Lanzarote Airport, La Palma Airport, or hotel delivery) and ends when you return the vehicle to the same location or another agreed point.
The rental rate includes full insurance (Collision Damage Waiver and Third Party Liability), unlimited mileage within the Canary Islands, 24/7 roadside assistance, and one additional driver at no extra charge. The rate does not include fuel, optional extras (child seats, GPS, additional drivers beyond the first), parking fees, tolls (none exist on the Canary Islands), fines, or ferry tickets if you wish to take the vehicle to another island.
The main driver must be at least 21 years old and have held a full valid driving licence for a minimum of one year. Drivers aged 21-24 may be subject to a young driver supplement depending on the vehicle category. Drivers must present a valid driving licence at pickup; EU licences are accepted without restriction. Non-EU licence holders are strongly recommended to carry an International Driving Permit (IDP) alongside their national licence, as Spanish law requires it.
All drivers must be named on the rental agreement before taking the wheel. The first additional driver is included free of charge; any further drivers incur a small daily fee. Unlisted drivers are not covered by insurance.
4Drive Canary Islands does not require a deposit or credit card. You may pay the full rental amount by debit card (Visa Debit, Mastercard Debit) or in cash (euros) at the pickup desk. Payment is due before you collect the keys. We do not place any hold or block on your card, and we do not ask for a security deposit.
If you choose to add optional extras (child seat, GPS, extra insurance cover), these are paid at pickup. Fuel is your responsibility; you receive the car with a full tank and must return it full to avoid a refuelling charge.
Every 4Drive Canary Islands rental includes full insurance as standard: Collision Damage Waiver (CDW) and Third Party Liability (TPL). There is zero excess - you are not liable for damage to the vehicle in the event of an accident, provided you comply with the terms of this agreement. The insurance covers accidental damage, theft, fire, and third-party claims.
Insurance does not cover damage caused by reckless driving, driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs, off-road use, driving on unpaved roads not marked on official maps, deliberate damage, or use of the vehicle in violation of Spanish traffic law. Tyre and windscreen damage caused by negligence is also excluded. If you drive in breach of these conditions, you will be liable for the full cost of repairs.
The vehicle must be driven only on paved public roads. Mountain roads (such as those leading to Teide National Park, Masca, and Anaga) are permitted and covered by insurance, provided they are official tarmac roads shown on a map. Off-road tracks, forest trails, and beach driving are strictly prohibited.
You can book online via our website or by contacting us directly by email or phone. Once your booking is confirmed, you will receive a confirmation email with your reservation reference number, rental dates, pickup location, vehicle category, total price, and cancellation policy. Please check all details carefully. If anything is incorrect, contact us immediately.
Your booking is not final until you receive written confirmation from 4Drive Canary Islands. Quotes and provisional reservations are subject to availability.
You may cancel your booking free of charge up to 48 hours before the scheduled pickup time. Cancellations made with less than 48 hours' notice are non-refundable. To cancel, email us with your booking reference number or call our customer service team.
If you need to amend your booking (change of dates, pickup location, or vehicle category), contact us at least 48 hours in advance. Amendments are subject to availability and may incur a price adjustment. Changes made within 48 hours of pickup are treated as a cancellation and new booking.
If you fail to collect the vehicle at the agreed time and place (no-show), your booking will be cancelled without refund.
At pickup, you must present your driving licence, passport or national ID card, and your booking confirmation. We will inspect the vehicle with you and note any existing damage on the rental agreement. Please check the car thoroughly - bodywork, tyres, windscreen, lights, and interior - and report any marks or scratches before you drive away. Take photos if you wish. This protects you from being charged for pre-existing damage.
The vehicle will have a full tank of fuel. You are responsible for refuelling before return. Check the fuel type (petrol or diesel) - it is clearly marked on the fuel cap and in the vehicle documentation.
If your flight is delayed and you arrive later than the agreed pickup time, please contact us as soon as possible. We will do our best to accommodate you. Pickups at Tenerife South, Tenerife North, Gran Canaria, Lanzarote, and La Palma airports are available 24/7 by prior arrangement. Hotel deliveries are arranged to suit your arrival time.
You must return the vehicle to the agreed location at the agreed time with a full tank of fuel. Late returns may incur an additional daily charge. If you need to extend your rental, contact us in advance - we will do our best to accommodate you, subject to availability and payment of the additional rental days.
At return, we will inspect the vehicle with you. If there is any new damage not recorded at pickup, and if it falls outside the scope of insurance cover (see section 4), you will be charged for repairs. Cleaning fees apply if the car is returned excessively dirty (e.g. covered in mud, sand, or spills inside). A refuelling charge applies if the tank is not full - we charge the cost of fuel plus a service fee.
The vehicle may only be driven in the Canary Islands (Tenerife, Gran Canaria, Lanzarote, Fuerteventura, La Palma, La Gomera, El Hierro). It may not be taken to mainland Spain, Morocco, or any other country. If you wish to take the car to another Canary Island by ferry (Fred Olsen, Armas), you must request written permission from 4Drive at the time of booking. Taking the vehicle on a ferry without permission voids your insurance and you will be liable for all costs.
The vehicle must not be used for commercial purposes, racing, driver training, towing, or any illegal activity. It must not be sublet or lent to anyone not named on the rental agreement. Smoking is prohibited in all our vehicles.
You are responsible for complying with all traffic laws. Speed limits in the Canary Islands are 120 km/h on motorways (TF-1, TF-5, GC-1), 90 km/h on rural roads, and 50 km/h in urban areas unless otherwise signed. Right-hand traffic applies (Spain). Seat belts are compulsory for all occupants. Drink-driving is illegal (limit 0.5 g/L blood alcohol). Mobile phone use while driving is prohibited unless hands-free.
Any fines, penalties, or charges (parking tickets, speeding fines, toll charges - though there are no tolls on the islands) incurred during the rental period are your responsibility. If we are notified of a fine after you return the vehicle, we will forward it to you and may charge an administrative fee.
In the event of a breakdown, call our 24/7 roadside assistance number (provided in your rental documents). We will send help or arrange a replacement vehicle. Do not attempt repairs yourself or authorise third-party repairs without our consent, or you may not be reimbursed.
If you are involved in an accident, you must stop, call the police if anyone is injured or there is significant damage, and obtain a police report (denuncia). Contact 4Drive immediately. Exchange details with any other parties involved, take photos of the damage and scene, and complete the European Accident Statement form (provided in the glove box). Failure to report an accident or obtain a police report may void your insurance cover.
Do not admit liability or sign any document you do not understand. If the accident is the fault of another party, we will assist you in pursuing their insurance for compensation.
You are responsible for the vehicle from the moment you collect it until the moment you return it. You must take reasonable care to prevent theft or damage. Always lock the car and do not leave valuables visible inside. Park in secure areas where possible. Theft of the vehicle due to negligence (e.g. leaving keys inside, leaving the car unlocked) may not be covered by insurance.
4Drive Canary Islands is not liable for any indirect or consequential loss arising from the rental, including loss of time, missed flights, accommodation costs, or inconvenience. We are not responsible for personal belongings left in the vehicle. Our liability is limited to the direct cost of the rental.
We collect personal data (name, address, email, phone number, driving licence details, payment information) solely for the purpose of processing your rental booking and complying with legal obligations. We do not share your data with third parties except as required by law or for the provision of rental services (e.g. insurance, roadside assistance). Your data is stored securely and retained only as long as necessary.
For full details, please see our Privacy Policy. By booking with us, you consent to the processing of your personal data as described.

In such cases, we will endeavour to offer alternative arrangements or a full refund.
