The centrepiece of La Palma: a vast volcanic crater 9 km across and 1500 m deep, covered in Canary pine and cut by streams. Drive to the Mirador de la Cumbrecita for the classic viewpoint (book a free pass online in advance during peak season), or hike down into the crater from the Los Brecitos trailhead. The Cascada de Colores (rainbow waterfall) is a highlight. Serious hikers can do the full traverse - ask at the visitor centre.
At 2426 m, this is one of the best places on Earth to observe the night sky. The Gran Telescopio Canarias (the world's largest single-aperture optical telescope) sits here, along with a dozen other instruments. You can visit during the day (the visitor centre has exhibits and viewpoints), but the real magic happens after dark - join a stargazing tour or simply drive up yourself on a clear night and watch the Milky Way unfold.
